Inventing Our Future

Welcome to Board of Trustee Meetings

Board meetings are open to the membership. This is what to expect when you come.

The meetings follow Robert’s Rules of Order, which means that attendees, other than Board members, are generally observers only. If you have an item you wish to present to the Board, whether you are a committee chair or general member, please contact the Board chair,   (see phone number and email address in the Fellowship Directory,  Sunday bulletin, or the Uni-Sun).

Committees may also work with their BOT liaisons to present items to the Board.

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of the month at 7pm in the Fellowship Hall. Meeting time and place can be confirmed on the calendar – either on the website or in the office.

MINNESOTA VALLEY
UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST FELLOWHIP
BOARD COVENANT
APPROVED OCTOBER 14, 2009

To serve the congregational mission, the board at MVUUF will:
  • Lead with vision and continue to learn;
  • Openly and intentionally communicate with the congregation;
  • Respect the work of committees, chairs, staff and minister; and,
  • Presume good faith.
As board members we will respect our time together and will:
  • Come regularly and on time to board meetings;
  • Come prepared by reading board e-mails and relevant documents in advance;
  • Seek and share appropriate knowledge so we all have information for wise decisions;
  • Keep commitments to each other and to the congregation;
  • Actively seek and listen to all points of views and share our own;
  • Be brief;
  • Share in the work of the board;
  • If unable to fulfill responsibilities, resign so a new trustee can be named;
  • Ensure that all board members are involved in decisions requiring a congregational vote;
  • Stand by board decisions and speak to the congregation with one voice;
  • Avoid triangulation;

INVENTING OUR FUTURE

As we begin the process of looking deeply at the future of MVUUF, we invite each of you to join the conversation and participate in the planning, questioning, dreaming, and visioning. Together we are inventing the future of MVUUF.

Why now? Some churches wait until there is a crisis, or their membership numbers decline, or they can’t meet their budget before they decide to do some planning. MVUUF is not in a crisis, our membership numbers are not declining and we have been budgeting wisely.  Our driving issues are healthy ones; the arrival of our first full time minister, increased programming with greater variety and frequency, and an increase in people seeking a liberal religious community.

Who will be involved? Discerning the future of MVUUF cannot be done in isolation but in shared conversations among the members, the board, lay leaders, the minister, and staff. The conversations will be about our identity as a faith community and our sense of purpose. Who are we?  How are we making a difference and for whom? And what measurable plans help us confirm the difference we make?

A work team has been appointed by the board to gather your ideas and dreams, look at historical and current data, and make recommendations.

When do we start?  January 17, 2010 during the service we are calling our Shared Ministry Sunday we will introduce you to the Inventing Our Future task team and the beginning of the process. Additional meetings will be held throughout the spring. The goal is 3 to 5 year vision statements presented to the congregation at the annual meeting, May 16, 2010.

The second phase will begin in the fall of 2010.  We expect that process to take more conversations, particularly about options and models and specific goals for reaching the future we have defined as ours. At the end of the second year the board will have an implementation plan that reflects your vision for MVUUF’s future – to be presented at the 2011 annual meeting.

It’s all about our shared future, our
Shared Ministry and we hope you enjoy the process.
